Habit: this widespread rush forms densely tufted clumps of erect, round stems with basal medium green leaves that are flat and narrow. The inflorescence is a terminal cluster of fewer than 10 small greenish-brown florets with large bracts extending beyond the flower cluster. Fruit is a small oval capsule filled with many tiny seeds. Blooms between April and May.
Ecology: found growing near water, in moist areas, wetlands throughout North America, up to elevations of 7000 ft (2134 m).
