Cardamine nuttallii

slender toothwort

Habit: delicate herbaceous perennial grows 8-10 in (20-25 cm) tall from short rhizomes. The dark green leaves at the base of the stem are rounded and shallowly lobed sometimes resembling mittens.  Slender toothwort’s flowers are the typical of the mustard family with four petals, these in particular are light pink to light purple with the veins more vividly colored. Flowers bloom from early to late spring.

Ecology: found in the low lands and moist to wet open or shaded forests west of the Cascades at low to mid elevations.

Growing Conditions: Full to partial shade, moist nutrient rich soil.

Cardamine nuttallii is a good specimen for the shade or woodland garden.
