Chamaecyparis lawsoniana

Port Orford cedar

Habit: a conical shaped evergreen cedar, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana is long lived and can reach great heights in native stands, yet untypical in a garden setting.  With age, branches can droop slightly, leaves are small and scale like, green having a bluish hue showing a pattern of Xs on the back. Bark is thick and reddish brown. Pollen cones are dark brown, seed cones are small and round with 6-10 scales.

Ecology: found in a limited native habitat, mainly found on moist slopes at low elevations near the coast range.

Growing Conditions: full sun to partial shade, with well-drained moist soil.

Highly susceptible to root rot caused by the fungal pathogen, Phytophthora, extra precautions should be taken when deciding to plant this species, such as in areas not receiving any run off water, and making sure the soil drains well.
