Camassia leichtlinii v. leichtlinii

white camas

Habit: grows from a solitary starchy bulb, with numerous, basal, grass-like leaves forming a 2 ft (60cm) tall clump of foliage. A tall scape (leafless stem), rising above the leaves, holds 5 to 20 creamy white flowers with yellow stamens and 6 tepals of similar size and shape and all evenly spaced. The star-shaped flowers open sequentially from bottom to top. The withering tepals twist together around developing papery capsules. Blooms from May to July.

Ecology: moist open areas, wet meadows, hillsides and roadsides, only found in few locations in southern Oregon at low to mid elevations.

Growing Conditions: full sun to partial shade in fertile, acidic, humus soil. It prefers moist to wet well-drained soil in the winter and spring and fairly dry during summer dormancy.
